Hillary is excited to join the Madrone Trails community as the new 1st grade teacher. She is originally from Washington, D.C. and got her undergraduate degree in environmental studies from the University of Vermont. She began working with children through farm and garden-based education in Vermont and made her way out to Portland, OR where she managed a children’s garden. Hillary wanted to connect more deeply to students and began working in schools. She worked in a Montessori school and a private arts-based school for students with learning disabilities in the D.C. area. She believes in teaching to the whole child through the arts and place-based education. She moved back to Oregon to attend Southern Oregon University’s Masters of environmental education program. She had a graduate assistantship and helped coordinate an overnight and a day-long field trip program in the Rogue Valley. She is obtaining her teaching license and will graduate from SOU in June. Hillary has traveled to 15 countries, is a certified doula, loves to swim, kayak, and hike and loves anything with chocolate.
